Varicose Veins Laser Ablation and Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins are swollen and twisted veins that usually appear in the legs and can cause discomfort or pain. Two common treatments for varicose veins are laser ablation and sclerotherapy.

Laser ablation:

  • Laser ablation, also known as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat from a laser to close off the affected vein.
  • During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the vein and guided to the affected area.
  • A laser fiber is then inserted through the catheter, and the heat from the laser causes the vein to close off and eventually be absorbed by the body.
  • The procedure usually takes less than an hour and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Sclerotherapy:

  • Sclerotherapy is a procedure that involves injecting a chemical solution directly into the affected vein to cause it to close off.
  • The solution irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and stick together.
  • Over time, the vein is absorbed by the body and blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins.
  • Sclerotherapy can be performed on small varicose veins and spider veins, and is often done in multiple sessions.

Benefits of laser ablation and sclerotherapy:

  • Both procedures are minimally invasive and usually do not require general anesthesia.
  • They can be performed on an outpatient basis, which means patients can go home the same day.
  • They can provide relief from the discomfort and pain associated with varicose veins.
